The third round of the Women's World Chess Championship 2008 ended on Saturday, September 6, with Chinese Hou Yifan continues to lead with 2557 rating points and zero losses, slightly before the world's 2nd best female chess player Indian Humpy Koneru with 2622. Pia of Sweden stays close behind with rating points. The 8th match on the third round with Russian Aleksandra Kosteniuk and her compatriot Tatjana Kosintseva played a long, suspenseful game that ended in a draw.

The Women's World Chess Championship 2008 takes place from August 28 to September 18 in Nalchik, Russia. 64 of the top ranked women chess players are competing in this year's event, excluding the number 1 ranked player, Judit Polgar, who avoids playing sectorial events, and number 3 Xie Jun.

The Women's World Chess Championship 2008 is a knockout tournament consisted of six rounds. The third round, held on September 6, was the last round before the quarter finals, scheduled to take place on September 7-8, with tie-breakers on September 9th. The quarter finals will see Humpy Koneru playing Chinese Shen Yang, Hou Yifan competing against Lilit Mkrtchian of Armenia, Pia Craming will try to knock down Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria, and Ukrainian International Master Anna Ushenina will be making her best efforts against Russian Alexandra Kosteniuk.
